A festive make-ahead breakfast featuring sourdough cubes soaked in rich eggnog custard with vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg, baked until golden and served with maple syrup or whipped cream.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf sourdough bread, day-old (1416 oz)
  • 2 cups eggnog
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, maple syrup, whipped cream, fresh berries, toasted pecans

  • Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

    2. Cube sourdough into 1-1.5 inch pieces and spread evenly in the prepared dish.

    3. In a large bowl whisk together eggnog, eggs, cream, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.

    4. Pour custard mixture over bread cubes, pressing gently to ensure even soaking, then drizzle melted butter on top.

    5. Cover with foil and refrigerate overnight, or let sit at room temperature for 30 minutes if baking same day.

    6. Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes until the top is golden and the custard is set, then let rest 10 minutes before serving.
