Description

Elevate your baking with these beautiful shaped breads, perfect for creating stunning designs using readily available ingredients. This guide focuses on the artistic shaping process, transforming simple dough into charming designs that are both fun to make and delicious to eat. Ideal for home bakers of all skill levels looking for quick and impressive ways to add artistry to their table.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (8-ounce) can refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • Flour, for dusting
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted (optional, for brushing)
  • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (optional, for brushing)
  • Poppy seeds, sesame seeds, or everything bagel seasoning (optional, for topping)

  • Instructions

    1. Preheat your oven to 375 F (190 C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup. Lightly dust a clean work surface with flour to prevent the dough from adhering.

    2. Carefully unroll the can of crescent roll dough onto your floured surface. Do not separate the individual triangles if you intend to create a larger, more intricate shape. For simpler shapes, you can separate them as needed.

    3. Shape your dough art. For a “rabbit” shape, for example, gently press two crescent triangles together at their widest ends to form a larger rectangle. Then, cut out a rabbit shape using a sharp knife or even kitchen shears. You can use small pieces of dough to form ears and attach them. For other designs, consider rolling the dough into ropes and twisting them into braids, spirals, or even simple knots. Use your fingers to gently pinch and mold the dough into your desired form.

    4. Carefully transfer your shaped dough onto the prepared baking sheet. If you’re making multiple smaller shapes, ensure there’s a little space between each for even baking.

    5. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter and honey/maple syrup, if using. Lightly brush this mixture over your shaped dough. Immediately sprinkle with your chosen toppings, such as poppy seeds or sesame seeds, if desired.

    6. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until the shaped breads are puffed up and golden brown. The exact time may vary depending on your oven and the thickness of your shapes.

    7. Once baked, remove the baking sheet from the oven and transfer the shaped breads to a wire rack to cool slightly. They are best enjoyed warm, but also delicious at room temperature.
