  • Total Time: 45-50 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Description

This Caramel Apple French Toast Bake is an incredibly simple yet rich, sweet, and comforting dish perfect for breakfast or brunch. It features soft bread soaked in a custardy mixture, studded with tender apples, and swirled with decadent caramel, all baked to golden perfection in one easy casserole. It’s designed for maximum flavor with minimal effort, making mornings sweeter and less stressful.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf (13-16 ounces) challah or brioche bread, day-old preferred
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce, plus more for serving

  • Instructions

    1. Preheat your oven to 375 F (190 C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.

    2. Cut your challah or brioche bread into 1-inch thick cubes or slices. Arrange the bread pieces evenly in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.

    3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined and smooth.

    4. Sprinkle the diced apples evenly over the bread in the baking dish. Drizzle the melted butter over the bread and apples.

    5. Carefully pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread and apples, making sure all the bread pieces are saturated. Drizzle half of the caramel sauce over the top, then use a knife or skewer to gently swirl it into the bread mixture.

    6. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the French toast is golden brown on top, puffed up, and the center is set. A knife inserted into the center should come out mostly clean.

    7. Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. Drizzle with the remaining caramel sauce before cutting into squares and serving warm.
