Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf day-old sourdough bread (1416 oz), cubed
  • 2 cups full-fat eggnog
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or half-and-half
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shredded white cheddar or cream cheese cubes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • powdered sugar or maple syrup for serving

  • Instructions

    1. Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with melted butter.

    2. Cube sourdough into 1- to 1½-inch pieces and place evenly in the prepared dish.

    3. In a large bowl whisk together eggs, eggnog, heavy cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.

    4. Pour the custard mixture over the sourdough cubes, pressing gently to soak.

    5. For an overnight version, cover tightly and refrigerate 8–12 hours; for same-day, let rest 30 minutes at room temperature.

    6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). If chilled, let dish sit at room temperature for 15 minutes.

    7. Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes until the center is set and the top is golden.

    8. Allow to cool 5–10 minutes before serving with powdered sugar, maple syrup, whipped cream, candied pecans, or fresh berries.
