1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a baking dish.
2. Wash and dry apples, cut off the top third, and scoop out the core and seeds.
3. Brush apple interiors with lemon juice to prevent browning.
4. In a bowl, mix oats, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
5. Add softened butter and blend with a fork until crumbly.
6. Spoon the oat mixture into each apple, pressing lightly and mounding on top.
7. Place apples in the prepared dish and add 1/4 cup water to the bottom.
8. Bake for 30 minutes or until apples are tender and topping is golden.
9. Let apples cool for 5–10 minutes before serving.
