A cozy make-ahead holiday breakfast featuring sourdough soaked in a rich eggnog custard and baked to golden perfection.
Ingredients
Instructions
1. Cube day-old sourdough into 1–1.5-inch pieces and lightly butter a 9×13-inch baking dish
2. Layer half of the bread cubes in the dish
3. Whisk eggs, eggnog, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, melted butter and bourbon or rum until smooth
4. Pour half of the custard over the first bread layer to soak
5. Add remaining bread cubes and pour remaining custard on top, pressing gently
6. Cover tightly and refrigerate for at least 6 hours or overnight
7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and remove casserole from fridge 30 minutes before baking
8. Bake uncovered for 45–55 minutes until puffed and golden brown, tent with foil if top browns too quickly
9. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving
10. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with maple syrup, whipped cream or fresh berries
