1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with heavy-duty aluminum foil.
2. Cut four 12 x 15 inch pieces of foil and brush the centers with melted butter or olive oil.
3. Place one salmon fillet in the center of each foil piece and season with salt, pepper, and half the minced garlic.
4. Arrange asparagus spears next to each fillet, drizzle with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper.
5. In a small bowl, combine remaining melted butter, garlic, lemon juice, and herbs if using, then brush over the salmon and asparagus.
6. Top each fillet with lemon slices and fold the foil edges to seal packets tightly, leaving space inside for steam.
7. Bake on the prepared sheet for 15-18 minutes, depending on fillet thickness, until salmon flakes easily.
8. Optional: open the top of each packet and broil for 2 minutes for a golden finish, then serve directly in the foil or on plates.
