Description

Ingredients

  • 1 stick unsalted butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp light corn syrup
  • pinch salt
  • 2 large apples peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 5 cups day-old brioche or challah bread cubes
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans optional

  • Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease an 8×8 baking dish

    2. Melt butter, brown sugar, corn syrup and salt until smooth; pour into the dish

    3. Toss apples with lemon juice and cinnamon; arrange over caramel layer and sprinkle nuts

    4. Layer half the bread cubes over apples

    5. Whisk eggs, milk, cream, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg; pour half over bread

    6. Add remaining bread cubes and pour remaining custard; press lightly

    7. Cover and refrigerate overnight

    8. Bake uncovered for 45–50 minutes until golden and center is set

    9. Let rest 10 minutes before serving, dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with extra caramel
