1. Butter one side of each bread slice evenly.
2. Place one slice buttered-side down and spread mustard or honey if using.
3. Layer half the cheddar on the unbuttered side of the bread.
4. Arrange apple slices in a single layer over the cheese.
5. Add turkey slices or caramelized onions if desired.
6. Top with remaining cheddar and the second bread slice, buttered-side up.
7. Preheat panini press or skillet over medium heat.
8. Grill sandwich in panini press for 3–4 minutes until golden and melted.
9. If using a skillet, press sandwich with a heavy pan, cook 3 minutes per side.
10. Let rest 1 minute, then slice and serve warm.
