  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 2 sandwiches 1x

Description

This sourdough grilled cheese sandwich layers crusty sourdough bread, melty mozzarella, ripe tomato, fresh basil, and an optional balsamic glaze for a comforting yet elevated dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 46 oz mozzarella cheese, sliced or shredded
  • 68 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 large ripe tomato, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 12 teaspoons balsamic glaze (optional)

  • Instructions

    1. Pat tomato slices dry with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.

    2. Butter one side of each slice of sourdough bread evenly.

    3. Place two slices of bread, buttered side down, on a work surface.

    4. Layer mozzarella cheese, tomato slices, basil leaves, salt, and pepper on each slice.

    5. Top with remaining bread slices, buttered side up.

    6. Heat a cast-iron skillet or heavy pan over medium-low heat.

    7. Place sandwiches in the skillet and grill for 3-4 minutes per side until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted, pressing gently with a spatula.

    8. Remove from heat and let rest for one minute.

    9. Drizzle balsamic glaze over the top slice, slice sandwiches in half, and serve immediately.
