  • 6 cups cubed sourdough bread
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 1/2 cups pumpkin purée
  • 1/3 cup maple syrup
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk or cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • pinch ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)

  • Instructions

    1. Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly butter a 9×13-inch casserole dish.

    2. Place half of the sourdough cubes in the prepared dish and drizzle with 1 tablespoon melted butter.

    3. In a large bowl whisk pumpkin purée, maple syrup, brown sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla, spices, and salt until smooth.

    4. Pour half of the custard over the bread cubes and press gently to soak.

    5. Stir 1/4 cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 2 tablespoons melted butter to form the cinnamon swirl.

    6. Drizzle half of the cinnamon swirl over the soaked bread layer.

    7. Add remaining sourdough cubes, pour remaining custard, and top with remaining cinnamon swirl.

    8. Sprinkle chopped nuts if using and let rest 15 minutes for bread to absorb.

    9. Bake 40 minutes or until the top is golden and custard is set.

    10. Let the bake rest 10 minutes before serving.
